Opportunities to connect with others, and work together are everywhere. Challenge yourself to think outside your usual box, strike up a conversation and look for opportunities to promote your art offline in a creative way to help grow your sales.

The Recipe: Promote your Art, Airbnb Style!

The Recipe Inspiration

Recently during my visit to Bangkok, I noticed that the Pullman Bangkok Hotel G was home to some amazing artwork which soon became the talking piece between my friends and I.

Spread across 3 hotel rooms, and we noticed each room had a different painting of a zebra. Each by the same artist - Bilou.

With a little online research, I learnt the artist had 200 paintings in the Pullman G Bangkok and a further 112 in Pullman Pattaya, Thailand.

This artist used his creativity to create an opportunity where his artwork could be seen by guests in 312 hotel rooms every day. His art them became the talking piece due to them being unique to each room.

On hunting, I couldn't find his work for sale online, however, imagine if he used this opportunity to promote his Society6 or Redbubble store where his artwork could be sold in the form of doona covers, clocks, cushions...

What I love about this:

  • Created an offline opportunity that could have been used to promote online products
  • High exposure for his artwork
  • Unique paintings in each room became the talking point


The Method*

* Use your creativity to modify, improve and find something that works for you!

Step 1Start by finding a way to get your art in front of as many 'offline' eyeballs as you can!  

In the story above, the artist found a way to get his artwork into the rooms of 312 Pullman Hotel rooms. Hotel rooms = High turnover of eyeballs.

Look and listen out for opportunities to get your artwork in front of as many people as possible, with as least work as possible. Remember this is all about who you know, working smart, and being willing to have conversations with someone who may hold the key to getting your artwork on display.

To negotiate your placement there, start by warming your lead as much as possible, then go in with a great value proposition. This means putting yourself in their shoes, and find a pain point they may be experiencing, then going in with a way of alleviating this for them.


For example.

An AirBNB host may want to decorate their apartment or house at low cost. Can you offer to decorate their apartment with your Society6 artwork in the form of a clock, a doona, cushions and a print on the wall? You could supply your artwork for free, with a flyer and instructions on how they can sign up as a promoter on Society6. They will then be motivated to promote your work in their apartment as they get paid a commission for any artwork they sell for you, and you sell more art. It's a win-win!

Step 2Once you have their attention, let them know they can purchase your artwork in the form of a variety of products.

Work with your 'host' to negotiate a way to inform guests that your work is available for sale.

Get creative... you could look at leaving some flyers, a catalog, a beautifully framed piece or even a beautifully crafted coffee table book.

Keep in mind, many people won't understand what Society6, RedBubble or Zazzle are, so be sure to inform them of the types of products available for purchase. Also, make sure your artwork provides details of your online stall, including a URL etc.

Step 3Find a way to keep in contact with them in the future social media or email.

By now the guests have seen your artwork, and are mesmerised by what you have to offer, it's time to kick it up a notch.

The best way to do this is by growing a loyal community of followers on a platform like Instagram, Facebook, Snap Chat or email.

Now this recipe isn't a 'Marketing 101 Lesson' so I'm not going to go into too much detail, but what I do want to get across is that, although you may consider yourself an artist, understanding and using business and marketing strategies are an important part of building a sustainable income.

One book I highly recommend reading is Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers by Seth Godin. This book will help you understand how you can turn the guests who have seen your artwork into customers and then into advocates who promote your work for you.

Remember, it's all about finding an inviting way to keep in contact with them well after their visit. Let your creativity run wild.

Hopefully by now your head is spinning with all kinds of possibilities, so it’s time to put it into action!

Why not set yourself the challenge to create one new opportunity to present your work offline, and see where it leads?

Pour yourself a coffee or a glass of wine, sit in your favourite creative space and then let the brainstorming begin.

  1. Start by thinking of the people you know, and the places you've visited. Places with a high turnover of eyeballs. Write a list of 10 potential places you could display your art.
  2. Once you have your list, select the top 3 options with the highest potential, and set yourself a goal to chat to these 3 people by the end of the week.
  3. Chat to them, and see what opportunities arise.

Remember, with the right value proposition, you may even find yourself being paid for having your artwork presented!
